RE/ACTION
Hello, fellow property investors! Welcome to RE/ACTION - which stands for Real Estate ACTION – a Personal Property Investment Blog that focuses on actionable strategies and personal insights for properties investors like you and me, as seen through my eyes as I go through my investment actions. This is where we focus on real estate as our investment vehicle of choice (as opposed to stocks trading, commodities, mutual funds, etc).
My name is Peter Chow and I’m a Private Investor, and while I’m not in my P.I. boots, I run an award-winning boutique Web Design house called Moophstudios, but that’s another story.
You know what they say about “Knowledge is Power“? Where does knowledge comes from? Education, coaching, guidance and wisdoms gathered from actually doing it (with all the loopholes, mistakes, unsaid rules, hidden costs, pitfalls, and lessons learnt) as opposed to only learning the theories of investment. There is also the modeling after successful predecessors that has been there, done that, to cut through all the unnecessary newbie mistakes that we are all bound to make when we began.
Based in Singapore, I started doing property investment seriously since mid of 2011 by attending property launches and investment talks in the weekends and I found out that while I can learn a lot about properties available for sale and on some location, I also found that these information are only very surface and in order to do this right, I would need to learn the proper way – by attending courses by successful investors. If anything worth doing, it’s worth doing it right.
So I went full steam ahead and took a few courses to give me a not only a balanced overview on properly investments, but also specific skills on each segment of the market, as well as the necessary skill set to do proper due diligence and calculate the risks involved with every opportunity. In all, I had spent over S$10K on my education – talk about investing in my education to gain what Robert Kiyosaki calls “the unfair advantage”!
However, what I also realized is that it is not uncommon for most students to come out and do nothing with their new-found knowledge. What we had learnt are only theories after all. This is where the rubber meets the road – knowledge alone is not power without action. Applied Knowledge is Power! The very theme of my little blog as I share what I get to learn, insights gleamed from the actions I took, people I talked to, research I did, visits I made, deals I negotiated, and properties I bought.
In nine months, my portfolio has grown from 1 to 9 with at least one being completed every year where I can take possession and implement my next step – either to sell for capital appreciation, rent out for cash-flow (with or without renovation), or whatever else I end up doing. This will keep me busy all the way until 2015 – the deadline I set for myself to achieve my target of financial freedom.
The important thing to note is that I’m not trying to impress you with my portfolio but rather impress upon you that I’m probably very much like most of you – I’m not rich, don’t have buckets of cash ready for me to invest with, no sugar mummy, an average income, with lots of bills to pay and a wife and mother to take care of, loans to settle, etc. (oh, if you are in a way better position, that’s great as you will be able to better take advantage of the opportunities that I may be pointing your way) - and if I can do this, so can you!
The point is, while I learn from the best property gurus (whom had already made it and became financially free), I’m just an average Joe too. All it takes is the willingness to learn, the ability to ask the right questions, the guts to take actions and the tenacity/patience to wait for your portfolio to grow as this is a mid to long term investment strategy, not a short one.
It’s an exciting journey where I get to learn to grow my portfolio (and in turn, my wealth) and having a platform to share my journey with like-minded souls, just as some gurus and fellow experienced investors who made a difference in my life. However, I must admit that most missives are opinionated and may be biased as I’m known to hold an opinion or two. You have been warned. But the Joker once asked, “Why so serious?”
Nevertheless, you are all welcome to have some fun here, learn with me and I hope you can find some nuggets of useful tips and gems that you can use for yourself as you grow your own property portfolio.
Sincerely,
Pete (speterman)
